Criminal Justice Support

The Criminal Justice Support Department provides essential support to Operational Officers through the delivery of a wide range of services.

Upon receipt of initial case papers from the Operational Officers, Case builders and Clerical Support will then prepare the file for submission to the CPS, obtaining the statements, medical and forensic evidence and prepare the disclosure for CPS and Defence. This removes the majority of the administrative burden from the operational officer enabling them to concentrate on their duties. It also ensures a consistently high standard of file.

With dedicated Witness Care Units based within the eastern and western areas of West Yorkshire, the Unit ensures that victims and witnesses are kept informed of the progress of the case. The Units are a contact point for the public for all witness matters.

The Code of Practice for Victims of Crime from April 2006 provides minimum standard of service for victims including the right to be informed of the progress of investigations and developments such as an arrest and the progress of a case through court.

The Guide for Victims (PDF) - provides further information about the Code, including the right for victims to complain if they are dissatisfied with the service provided by the Police or any other Criminal Justice agency.

The leaflet - Victims of Crime (PDF) - support and advice available in West Yorkshire provides information about what happens once a crime is reported and the contact details for the Witness Care units and the independent local Victim Support offices.

Resulting of Court Cases is performed at the Central Resulting Unit, which in turn updates the Police National Computer to enable availability of this information to other forces.

Non Urgent enquiries received from other forces are now dealt with at the Central Enquiries Unit, along with the procuring of medical statements from Doctors.

The Firearms Licensing Section deal with firearms licence related issues.

Coroner's Officers act as the liaison between Operational Officers, the public and H M Coroner. They prepare their own files for inquests.

The CIS Bureau and Quality Control deal with recording of crimes, defendants and pre-court information onto the Crime System and ultimately onto the Police National Computer.

All minor motoring offences, fixed penalty ticket issues and related summonses are dealt by the Central Process Bureau.
